Katie Eischen is an amazingly beautiful and talented stunt woman! In a previous post, I put up some shots of her as self promotion that was a little more main stream. Something she could submit to stunt coordinators and agencies….but we wanted to do something different this time around. So we counter cultured the last shoot into a dark and edgy/beautiful shoot. The bathtub shot is part of a series that that I am working on currently which you will see one of these days. Until then, enjoy the pictures….

Thanks to the ever faithful Emmy Magazine for sending me out to The Cat Ranch where Marc Maron holds his podcast WTF. Marc was cool enough to let me shoot where ever we wanted which worked out great. With a sausage in hand, Jon Glaser was the featured guest on the day’s podcast. It was for sure something to be remembered. Look for the image in the April/May issue of Emmy Magazine. And incase you were wondering….I didn’t let any cats out….

Pro’s Before Mo’s

About 3 months ago, I came up with a promotional concept to send to AD agencies, magazine publications and anyone else that might be interested in collaborating together. Personally, I feel like we live in a culture of instant gratification where everything we could possibly want is at our fingertips waiting for us to access and explore. I wanted to bring back the mystery and excitement in self promotion. So….I created a mailer that is made up of 5 parts. The first 4 promos have a simple drawing on the front of an element from my homepage on my website. On the back is addressed the the recipient with me riding a unicorn as the return address. I never say who I am. I never show a photo of what I shoot. That’s it. And I send each promo out every other day. Come the last day, the promo sent out has me riding a unicorn on the front and says my website address www.coreynickols.com below my unicorn. Ah…I wish I could ride a unicorn everywhere!

I did this for many reasons. The excitement of mystery was the biggest….but there are many others. For me….this is my anti-promotion promotion. It’s showing the viewer a little of who I am with out ever saying who I am which is so opposite from most promotions. I also am not limiting my photographic capability by placing my entire photo identity in one image. Instead, by putting simple drawings as my promotion, I let the viewer not come to a conclusion about my work until they have gone to my site and seen my portfolio as a whole. Finally, and this was super important for me, I wanted my potential viewers to have a polar feeling towards me and my work. People will either think this is a great idea or the stupidest idea ever. Great! It’s the luke warm middle that everyone in the industry should try to stay away from.

If you have been the recipient of one of these whimsically drawn promotions and think Unicorns rule or all moons should have mustaches (they should! A unicorn with a mustache…even better!)….hit me up. We can create a “chose your own adventure” together (don’t worry….I always cheat and go with the best page numbers….hahaha!).

Emmy Magazine & Unicorn Kerosene

I got the privilege to do a couple spreads in the latest issue of Emmy Magazine. What a great team of people who run and operate this magazine! Had it not been for the smoggy sky and the never ending summer, I would have thought I was in the south. Thanks to everyone who has made me feel so welcome knowing full my obsession for the obscure. I look forward to more work in the near future….for now here are some shots from the issue!

I got the chance to photograph Lisa D’Amato, the winner of AMNT’s All Star competition in promotion for the new perfume Dream Come True created by Hatch Beauty. When I was a kid, my dream come true was to be a pilot who owned a pet shop. It was the only career I could think of considering that collecting Teen Age Mutant Ninja Turtles wasn’t going to pay the bills. I was super fortunate to be able to photograph something so fun…and even though I am not flying an airplane or selling a gold fish…I am doing something I love and that is a Dream Come True. Sometimes I come across an element that interests me to no end. For what ever reason, this motel sign was just that. I think it has to do with the character in things that have experienced life. There is something tragically beautiful in things that are forgotten and old. Being a nation of consumerism….we do just that all the time. The funnest part of doing my old people series wasn’t the end result but rather the time I got to spend with people who have lived life. People who had experienced the greatest joys and the deepest sorrows that shaped so much of who they are today. The old things in this life are still living….and there is still so much joy left to be had!

Alpha Dog = Beta Wolf

I got a chance to shoot the band Beta Wolf before they went to Japan to play the Summer Sonic Festival. They are some really great guys who genuinely love life, music and people. The shoot was in light of billboard promotions in Japan for the festival. It was pretty exciting doing a shoot knowing that it is for a billboard. Right now Beta Wolf is on their way to Japan. Hope you guys kill it in Japan!

An OC Weekly Blanket

I got the opportunity to do a really cool story for OC Weekly about the surf ghetto in San Clemente. Among the people I got to photograph was Matt Biolos (cover shot) owner of Lost. I also got to meet interesting characters and genuine people. I love shooting stories like this because there is so much life out there that we don’t know about. So many people who if it were not for assignments like this, I would never get to meet. This shoot was a ton of fun. Looking forward to my next shoot for OC Weekly!

New Shtuff!

I decided a few months back that I should start working towards a new look that best represents me not only as a photographer but as a person. For those who know me, I am in many ways like a kid despite the facial hair and all the years behind me. So when I got a team to put the site together as well as promotions like business cards, etc., I wanted it to reveal more of who I am as a person along with being able to show off my work. It seems that there has been this trend in recent years for people of the arts who are super creative to go with websites that are…well….not creative. I feel like as an art community, we are turning to static websites instead of turning to community and support each other. We have replaced art and personality for convenience. Keep in mind, I say this as one who had a typical sterile online portfolio for years and realized it wasn’t worth it anymore. I realized something was missing from both my site as well as my artistic community. So with some work and effort, this website was birthed. I wanted to have the best of both worlds in this website. A site that you can look through the ENTIRE site in just 8 clicks (6 if you don’t use any scroll bars). I also wanted it to function in a way where if you wanted to see the images bigger, all you had to do is click on it and you could go through the portfolios by clicking each image at a larger size. I am extremely happy with the outcome and couldn’t have asked for a better site. Thank you Pip Craighead for all the artwork and thank you Mark Stuckey for putting it all together for me. You guys did an amazing job!
